The Importance of Proper Alignment in The Upper Cervical Spine
The top two vertebrae in the neck, the Atlas (C1) and Axis (C2), have many different jobs.
They cradle the skull and provide most of its range of motion. They house the lower brainstem and upper spinal cord, the vertebral arteries, the pain-sensitive dura mater, and the cerebrospinal fluid.
Just in front of them lays the internal jugular vein, which drains waste out of the brain.
Some of the most sensitive muscles in the body surround these bones, constantly relaying to the brain the position of the head on top of the body. This information is integrated in the brainstem with visual and vestibular inputs to calculate total body balance cues.
This area with its many important roles, has a high likelihood of causing many different symptoms when damaged. Damage often comes from whiplash injuries, concussions, or repetitive postures.
When this damage is left untreated, patients' neurological function at the cranio-cervical junction can degrade over time. The cervical spine has been recognized as a component in many different diseases, including
At Imagine X, we use a very sophisticated procedure to address this area of the spine.
Advanced Orthogonal Treatment is a type of Upper Cervical Care in which Dr. Silver specializes. Patients are required to undergo a cone beam CT scan that allows a 3-dimensional rendering of the neck. 10 measurements are taken of the vertebra and their relationship to the skull and calculations for correction are made.
The Advanced Orthogonal Adjustment is delivered on a table-mounted instrument. A single, gentle and very precise push is delivered over the Atlas vertebra, effectively returning alignment. Patients are monitored for several weeks for strengthening and stabilizing exercises.
